At Group HQ in Aberdeen the company has invested in a pioneering subsea product design and manufacturing facility that includes laboratory, design engineering, production, project management and hyperbaric testing facilities second to none in the industry.
In Llantrisant, South Wales, Balmoral Tanks runs a highly specialised design and manufacturing business providing hot press GRP and steel sectional tanks as well as cylindrical steel tanks for the global water storage and fire-fighting sectors.
Balmoral Business Park is setting the benchmark for Aberdeen’s south side developments and provides – through the quality of accommodation on offer, the prominence of the site, and calibre of the landscaping – occupiers with an ideal location for their business.
Individual business units, Balmoral Offshore Engineering, Balmoral Tanks and Balmoral Business Park, are run by defined management and manufacturing structures that are wholly responsible for profit and loss activity.

James S Milne CBE DL Hon DBA DHC
James Milne, known to his many friends and colleagues as JSM, Jim or Jimmy, established Balmoral Group in 1980 with just five employees designing and manufacturing glass reinforced plastic products. Today, employing approximately 600 people, the privately owned company provides design and manufacturing solutions to the global subsea, energy, civil and environmental engineering sectors.
Mr Milne is a firm believer in driving technology to maintain Balmoral’s competitive advantage in its chosen fields. The company’s policy of continuous research and development has been in place for many years resulting in innovative materials and unique processes being developed by the company. He also believes staff development is fundamental to business success and it is his philosophy to encourage employees to develop self-belief in addition to professional work skills.
Mr Milne was awarded the CBE in 1994; received an honorary doctorate from Aberdeen’s Robert Gordon University in 1999 and was made Burgess of Guild in the City of Aberdeen during 2004. Mr Milne became Deputy Lieutenant of Aberdeen City in January 2007 and received a Degree Honoris Causa from the University of Aberdeen in 2008. In 2011, he was inducted into the Entrepreneurial Exchange’s Hall of Fame and, in 2013, was made Honorary Doctor of Business Administration by Edinburgh Napier University.
Jim is a member of Entrepreneurial Scotland, Vice-Chairman of the North-east Committee and Fellow of the Scottish Council for Development and Industry (SCDI) and Chairman of the Friends of ANCHOR, a fundraising body which supports cancer care and research at Grampian University Hospitals NHS Trust.
Synonymous with Aberdeen and the Scottish manufacturing industry, Jim’s travels have taken him around the globe many times. A respected international entrepreneur and businessman he is renowned for his straight talking and for extolling the virtues of North-east Scotland.
