The journey from molecule to module
It’s a long way from the depths of the Atlantic Ocean to the relative peace and quiet of a research laboratory in the north-east of Scotland.

However, that’s where the enabling subsea buoyancy technology demanded by deepwater drilling and production begins.

Marcus Douglas, Balmoral’s technical and quality manager, takes up the story. “We recently completed a programme of research and investment in our new lab which now offers a fabulous array of instruments and services.

“Working with Dr Bob Oram, Group technical director, a number of joint development initiatives have taken place with key suppliers to ensure our materials, technology and equipment is the most up to date available.

“In fact, coming to Balmoral from a large multi-national organisation, I have to say that the equipment we have here is light years ahead of anything I’ve worked with in the past. This says a lot about the commitment to innovation which is inherent at Balmoral.”

So, when those huge drilling riser buoyancy modules plunge the depths of the world’s oceans, take a moment to reflect on where it all began…
