Gillian and Max's African Adventure

Husband and wife Gillian and Max Shearer from Alford have decided to support Friends of ANCHOR by attempting to scale Africa’s highest peak of Kilimanjaro.

Gillian and Max have raised in total £900.80, which is very kindly being 'match giving' by Bp, and will be divided between Friends of ANCHOR and Breast Cancer Care, Scotland, with each charity receiving £900.80.

Gillian and Max

The Aberdeenshire couple wanted to raise funds for the charity’s work after Gillian’s sister Joan was diagnosed with breast cancer last year. Following a course of treatment at the ANCHOR unit, ARI, Joan nominated the Friends of ANCHOR and Breast Cancer Care Scotland as she had benefited enormously from their support and care. Thankfully she is now on the road to recovery.

The couple’s 6 day climb to the ‘roof of Africa’ begins on 5 July 2010 and ends 19,341ft later on the breathtaking (literally!) snowy peaks of the Western Summit known as ‘Ngaje Ngai’ - the House of God. Gillian says, “It will certainly be a challenge both physically and mentally but well worth it if we can raise some funds for this very worthy cause”

“Fancy climbing Kilimanjaro this summer?”

...and that was the start of it!

After 5 days climbing we reached the summit of Kilimanjaro! To stand atop Africa’s highest peak is beyond words; it was breathtaking.  We passed through some fantastic landscapes; from the muggy lower rainforests to the boulder strewn paths of Shira Plateau. From rocky heath and landscapes that look like the surface of the moon.   It truly is out of this world!  The climbing is tough; every breath counts but if you heed your guide and go slow or pole pole as they say in Swahili; it’s achievable.  On summit day you set off around midnight; pitch black following a switchback trail that takes 6 hours.  This is to allow you time to savour the sunrise on Uhuru peak; and believe me it’s a wonderful sight.  You can’t help but marvel at the sight of huge glacier walls that tower above you whilst gazing across at the clouds; yes you’re actually above the clouds!  We’d like to send a big thank you to everyone who sponsored us.

Hakuna Matata!

Gillian and Max have raised £450.40p for Friends of ANCHOR and the same amount for Breast Cancer Care, Scotland.
