Dominique's epic charity cycle

dominique in parisDominique Dawson (22) from Cults, Aberdeen, has recently completed a challenging cycle trip from Greenwich in London to the Eiffel Tower in Paris, a total of 310 miles and has raised £2,330 for local charity, Friends of ANCHOR.

Dominique, who works full time in the family business, Finnies the Jewellers, decided to use her pedal power to boost the charity’s funds after close relatives spent time at the ARI’s ANCHOR unit.

foa-logoFriends of ANCHOR is a registered charity, formed in 1997, to raise money on behalf of the ANCHOR unit whose support area extends throughout the north east of Scotland including Orkney and Shetland.
The Aberdeen and North Centre for Haematology, Oncology and Radiotherapy (ANCHOR) unit is a fully funded NHS department at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary that brings together experts and specialist nursing support to coordinate care of patients with all forms of cancer, leukaemia and benign blood disorders such as haemophilia.

  • Dominique's pedal power

  • In Memory of Eddie Clark

    Eddie Clark very sadly passed away recently at the age of 85 after 16 years of being a patient at the ANCHOR unit. Eddie's son, Stuart Clark, from Aberdeen said; "The nurses and doctors were always so good to my Dad that I decided to ask people to make a donation to Friends of ANCHOR rather than buying flowers for Dad's service" A total of £213.00 was raised. Thank you to all who knew and loved Eddie.

  • Brian's event success

    fiona pearson mrs pam pack  brian packBrian Pack OBE retired from his post as Chief Executive of ANM Group at the end of April 2009 and in recognition of his work a charity dinner dance was held at the Thainstone Exchange on May 16. The magnificent total of £50,000 was raised of which £40,000 was donated to Friends of ANCHOR and £10,000 donated to the Friends of Inverurie Hospital. The charity would like to thank Brian, the event organising committee, ANM Group for hosting the event and everyone who attended the dance and were so generous.

  • Fun Run Trio's Success

    M&H Logistics (Aberdeen) Limited colleagues, Mark Douglas, Gavin Roy and Darren Mackenzie took part in the Baker Hughes 10K run on Sunday 24 May 2009 and raised £1,800 in sponsorship for the charity. The guys completed the run in good time and are hoping to compete again next year! Well done and thank you for all your support and the support of your very generous sponsors.

  • Leading construction company Mansell make huge donation

    Friends of ANCHOR received a bumper donation recently when kind hearted staff from the Aberdeen office of leading construction company Mansell presented a donation of £22,000. The fantastic figure – the result of a year long fundraising campaign by Mansell to mark the company reaching a century in business in 2008. Mansell used its centenary year to raise over £1million for a number of good causes, with each of its regional offices adopting a local charity to raise cash for. The company’s Aberdeen office chose to support Friends of ANCHOR

  • May day musical bash triumph

    Karen Brown and Sarah Geary held a May Day Musical Bash at Peterhead Football Club on Sunday 3rd May with help from Nathan Gardener and Karen's husband, Colin  It was a huge success and raised an incredible £3,045.76.

    The girls would like to thank Peterhead Football Club, the ladies at Style Council, Write Image, Ian Baird, Karen’s daughters, Sinead and Destiny and a very special thank you to Sandra Lillie’s family members who helped support them prior and during the event. They would also like to thank all the bands who performed free of charge; Sonic Stride, 11:11, The Form, Velvet Audio, The Colour Proposal, Lynn Taylor, Decipher, The Suburbz, Dr Flaw and Get In Get Out. Friends of ANCHOR would like to thank Karen, Sarah, Nathan and Colin, and all the helpers, sponsors, band members and to the generous crowd who came along and supported the event.

  • Remarkable Rose celebrates 100th birthday

    rose websiteCentenarian Rose Bryan from Fraserburgh celebrated her 100th birthday in style with two parties and messages from prominent figures including politicians and a very special telegram from HRH the Queen. Rose, born in 1909 in Leicester, has lived in the north-east for the past 22 years. She is a very active, lively and beautiful woman who is truly inspirational, and still has a real twinkle in her eye, spring in her step and a zest for life. In lieu of birthday gifts this year she requested donations for Friends of ANCHOR which amounted to £400. Our special thanks and very best wishes go to this charming wonderful lady and her generous family members and friends.

  • Running success

    Kintore man, Iain Donald, completed the Garioch 10K run on Sunday 29 March 2009 in a time of 54 minutes and 38 seconds and was a run away success in fund raising too. Through sponsorship donations from family members, friends and work collaegues he raised £1,171.30. Congratulations and well done Iain and thanks you to all his sponsors.
  • Brainy bunch

    kininmonth winning quiz team march 09The Kininmonth School fundraising committee, from Mintlaw, Peterhead, held a quiz night on Friday 20 March 2009 and raised £250 for Friends of ANCHOR. Many thanks to the organisers and all the teams who took part and everyone who contributed to this fantastic donation. (Pictured the brainy bunch who won the quiz.)

  • Band of Gold

    granite_city_brass_band_members websiteThe Granite City Brass Band took part in the Scottish Championships at the Caird Hall in Dundee in March. The band competed in the 2nd section, and came 4th out of 11 bands. Euphonium player, Kenny Chapman, also won best instrumentalist.Band members, Lisa Kendall (left) and Mandy Wilson (pictured at the contest), collected £278 during the event, which was then divided between Friends of ANCHOR and Cancer Research. Congratulations to the band on a fantastic performance and thank you for your valuable support. Thanks also to the Dundee audience who so kindly made donations.
