Friends of ANCHOR 20for20 anchors

This year, Friends of ANCHOR is celebrating 20 years of providing support to cancer and haematology patients throughout the North-east of Scotland.

Our milestone anniversary project for the 'Dream Big Campaign' will see the placement of 20 large anchor sculptures around Aberdeen city and shire and as far afield as Moray, Orkney and Shetland, which all fall within the Aberdeen Royal Infirmary’s ANCHOR Unit catchment area.

Anchors aweigh in...

The cause

As part of this milestone 20th anniversary, the charity has launched its biggest fundraising appeal ever by pledging £1 million to the University of Aberdeen’s ambitious £4.5m project to attract and recruit a world-class cancer research team to the North-east.

This is a huge investment that will ultimately have a significant impact on the care, treatment and wellbeing provided to local cancer and haematology patients.

Join Friends of ANCHOR in its ‘DREAM BIG’ initiative to help Aberdeen become a centre for world-class cancer research.

The project

The project will celebrate Friends of ANCHOR’s milestone year and embrace a working partnership with local artists and keen creatives throughout the North-east. The anchors will be located at iconic sites and within local communities. Financial support via sponsorship will be sought from local businesses and organisations.

The North-east public will be encouraged to get involved by undertaking their own anchor ‘voyage’ and to fundraise for the cause with a public exhibition and auction at the end of the project to bolster the return for the ANCHOR Unit.

The auction

The 20for20 anchor auction gives YOU the chance to own one of these remarkable sculptures. The auction celebrates the conclusion of the voyage and the tremendous work undertaken by the artists. Proceeds will go directly to the Dream Big campaign.

Artists selected

We received over 70 individual submissions which we shortlisted to around 35 designs to present to the selection committee which was made up of partner members and sponsors. From these submissions, we have chosen 19 designs, with the final design being selected from the school art competition.

Many designs took a nautical theme, whilst others gave due consideration to the work and cause of the charity. The standard and selection of designs was extremely high. What made the designs more impressive were the moving stories behind the artists’ inspiration. All of the artists gave their personal reasons and motivations for wanting to be involved in this project and it was a privilege to be part of this very emotive and creative process. In the end, we have managed to find a balance of styles, themes and unique characteristics to make up a collection worthy of the voyage.

School Art Competition

The 20for20 school art competition is open to all primary schools in Aberdeen city and shire, Moray, Orkney and Shetland. We're looking for designs that have been created collaboratively within each school. The winning school will be able to decorate the anchor themselves or work with an established artist to make their idea become a reality!
