Friends of ANCHOR 20for20 campaign launched
Celebrating 20 years of cancer support, haematology care and treatment for patients throughout the North-east of Scotland, local charity, Friends of ANCHOR, is launching its major anniversary event for the Dream Big Campaign ’20for20.’
Twenty iconic anchor sculptures will be placed around Aberdeen city and shire, and as far afield as Moray, Orkney and Shetland, which all fall within Aberdeen Royal Infirmary’s ANCHOR Unit catchment area. The project will celebrate and recognise Friends of ANCHOR’s 20th milestone year and embrace a working partnership with local artists and keen creatives throughout the North-east.
The iconic structures are being designed and manufactured by Balmoral Group to further bolster the Aberdeen-company’s ongoing commitment to Friends of ANCHOR which has seen Balmoral fully cover the running and administration costs of the charity since its inception 20 years ago.
Balmoral Group will manufacture the 20 anchors with all of the funds raised going directly to the charity.
Chairman of Friends of ANCHOR and Managing Director of Balmoral Group, Jim Milne, comments: “On behalf of Balmoral Group we are honoured to be a part of this milestone event. It has been a privilege to be instrumental in the growth of Friends of ANCHOR over the past 20 years.
“20for20 would not have been possible without the input of the team here at Balmoral and the support provided by Aberdeen City Council, Aberdeenshire Council and Aberdeen Inspired.
Strong links with Balmoral Group enabled Friends of ANCHOR to collaborate on the design and creation of the five foot-tall advanced composite structures. In-house multimedia designer Ewen Milne designed the anchor form and worked closely with Balmoral design and structural engineers as well as the production team to produce a stunning, structurally sound and safe sculpture.
“Every penny raised from the 20for20 will go directly to the charity’s biggest fundraising campaign to-date, ‘Dream Big’. This £1m campaign seeks to attract and recruit a world-class cancer research team to the North-east. This is a huge investment that will ultimately see clinical trials and care excel for cancer patients in the region.”
The charity has teamed up with local artist Mary Butterworth to encourage established and budding artists to get involved in this landmark creative project. With 20 large anchors representing 20 years of support to North-east cancer and haematology patients, each sculpture provides a blank canvas to participating artists as well as a unique opportunity to inspire and create an enduring design to mark the charity’s special anniversary year.
The anchors are available to sponsor at £10,000 each, with Aberdeen Football Club being the first sponsor to come on board. George Yule, Executive Vice Chairman at the club, said;
“The fantastic work that Friends of ANCHOR have undertaken over the past two decades has benefitted almost everyone in the north east in one way or another.
The 20for20 anchor campaign is a really innovative way to celebrate the charity’s 20th anniversary and one which AFC had absolutely no hesitation in becoming involved with.”
The anchors will form the 20for20 anchor ‘voyage’ beginning in July with a public showcase taking place in Aberdeen later in the year. The public can get involved by taking part in the anchor voyage as well as fundraising for the cause via the public exhibition and auction at the end of the project.
